DISCOVER NISEKO
About Niseko
Niseko (Niseko-chō) is a town located in Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. To Japanese people, Niseko principally refers to a mountain range and a municipal area. However, overseas the name has come to refer to a wider area of ski resorts encompassing Hokkaido's Mount Yōtei, often referred to as the "Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido", and Annupuri ranges.
Background History
In 1894, the indigenous Ainu-Kaributo tribe people knew Niseko as Kaributo before first settlers arrived in the 19th century. Hardships endured by the settlers living in triangular wood and foliage shacks included rice as a luxury enjoyed twice a year due to scarcity. Daily locally grown staples were potatoes, sweet corn, millet, mountain vegetables and yamame, a trout-like river fish, until a railway connected the once remote town. On October 1st, 1964, Kaributo was renamed Niseko, originating from the Ainu word 'Nisekoan' to mean ‘a sheer cliff jutting over a riverbank deep in the mountains'.
Weather
December is the time of year when Hokkaido morphs into the winter wonderland for which it is so famous. The island is once again covered by a blanket of pristine, white, fluffy powder. Average Temperature goes from 0˚Cto 8˚C in the Niseko region.
